[…] In his photographs the Düsseldorf artist Oliver Sieber concentrates on the various ways of expression and identitites of young people. For his latest project he has photographed young female soccer players between the age of ten and sixteen and has arranged their portraits to a series. For this he chose the same method used successfully before in other photo sequences.
Similar to a passport photo the girls are portrayed in a bust-like form and are assembled under the heading „11 friends….“

[…] „For the work titled „11 friends…“ I left the studio atmosphere and realized a photographic assembly on the sideline of a soccer field where two female teams were playing so that I could photograph the girls during their training. This method was especially important as it created a certain lack of prejudice as far as my person was concerned. The non existing styling of the girls made for a kind of timelessness. The soccer field is a space where the appearance of the girls makes their normal frame of represantation obsolete for a while and at least temporarily suggests independence.“

[…] Mädchen, die Fußball spielen, sind immer noch Mädchen mit exotischem Hobby. Ihr Interesse wird höchstens neugierig beäugt, immer kommentiert und oft für unpassend gehalten. Ihr Fussballspielen wird als Freizeitbetätigung ohne berufliche Zukunft betrachtet, im Gegensatz zu dem der Jungen im gleichen Alter, die schon auf Bundesligatauglichkeit getestet werden. Der Massensport Fussball, wenn er von Frauen ausgeübt wird, spielt in den Medien nur eine untergeordnete Rolle; dennoch entscheiden sich Mädchen in einer wichtigen Phase ihrer Entwickung dafür, Fussball zu spielen. Wie bei der Serie „Skinsmodsteds“, die Menschen zeigt, die in der Tradition von Jugendkulturen leben, beschäftigt sich auch diese Serie mit dem Phänomen von Gruppenzugehörigkeit und ist motiviert von der scheinbaren Abwesenheit der fotografierten Menschen in alltäglichen Bereichen des Lebens.
